Our Research
Kaumatua Mana Motuhake Poi (KMM Poi) is a research programme in collaboration with the University of Waikato’s Faculty of Māori and Ingenious Studies and Waikato Management School with 11 Kaumatua Service providers in New Zealand. Our mission is to utilise the strengths of kaumatua to enhance hauora (holistic approach to health) and mana motuhake (autonomy, identity, and self-determination). The goal is to achieve this by creating a collaborative academic and community research network along with kaumatua service providers and other stakeholders who in the process carry out our research projects.
Kohitanga Research Network is a network of kaumatua service providers that promotes indigenous innovation and supports the translation and implementation of the findings into communities. This cultivates into the implementation of two research projects Tuakana-Teina, and Mātauranga Tuku Iho (MTI). Tuakana-Teina project consists of kaumatua helping other kaumatua in need regarding health and social service identification and access. MTI is an intergenerational model for increasing physical activity and cultural knowledge exchange.
"Having a busy life both professionally and personal can be challenging if not balanced out. The Research Programme has given me tools to better balance that. The conversations have played a big part in that."
